Review: Jazz chamber of the highest quality, the Rothenberg/Maroney's duet is a marvelous surprise for those who love their music improvised. Two pieces from the pianist, one by the reed player and six improvised compose this very fine record. The instruments in the diversities of their coupling (piano and bass clarinet, prepared piano and alto sax, the possibilities are enormous) carry on the most passionate dialogue heard, in this instrumental context, for years. Even if the music belongs to the more severe avant-garde, it never sacrifice lyricism or melodies, a way than, suddenly, they can follow in a kind of téléphatic communication who is very impressive in itself. The genuine quality of their spontaneous création, their sense of instant form are astonishing. Far from long and diluted improvisations (the longer piece is about 11 minutes and most of them turn, more or less, around seven minutes) both men keep all along a sense of timing, rhythm and dynamic (who goes from the near silence to fortissimo) who demonstrate than they are REALLY playing together, listening to each others in the most vigilant but subtle way. Highly recommended to all lovers of free and improvise jazz (because this is JAZZ despite what some may thinks)- but I supposed than they already know about this record. Others, with more mainstream taste, could have a try, they may encounter the musical surprise of their life. And last but not least, the sound of this record belongs to the highest audiophile quality. Really a must to listen to.
