"Simultaneously off this planet and soothingly pop and indescribable," says WPRB Princeton University Radio’s Dr. Cosmo about STUCK, a NYC-based group with Chisa on vocals, Pat Cahill on Chapman Stick and trumpet, Alex Fortuit on drums and Matt Pavolka on bass. Having broadcast an on-air p-ART-y with two live sets of their signature groovy, jazzy, just-a-tiny-bit-pop fantasies from the WPRB studios just last Friday night, STUCK is now headed for a show at the swanky new club Coda, located at the …

Jeff Chin Trio

Written by Published in News Story
I recently checked out the Jeff Chin Trio at Shanghai 1930 in the SOMA District of San Francisco. The group is a Trio with Jeff Chin on piano, Ron Belcher on bass, and Billy Johnson on drums. The group even had caught reknown jazz producer Orrin Keepnews's ear as well and he came to check them out that same night which was pretty exciting. Jeff Chin normally is very heavily informed by R&B and it was very cool to see him do pretty much straight ahead jazz. He has a really lovely touch and is …

New Music from New York

Written by Published in News Story
Guitarist Rez Abbasi introduces his new trio, "Prana", at the Cornelia Street Cafe, NYC. This group is sure to create a buzz with new compositions of dazzling proportions. These pieces are influenced by Abbasi's origins, that of South Asia, namely India and Pakistan. His incorporation of a hybrid instrument called the sitar-guitar along with the use of drums/tablas, places his compositions in an arena not often heard in jazz today. These textures combined with the colorful sound of an organ, giv …

Eleonor England Trio Review

Written by Published in News Story
Last week I had the opportunity to hear the Eleonor England Trio play a pretty dead show at the Elbo Room in San Francisco's Mission Neighborhood. Man. I wasn't sure if it was jazz or a standup routine. One minute they were playing beautifully orchestrated standards with soaring vocals and the next minute the vocalist was improvising lyrics about the surrounding Mission Neighborhood and people were rolling around clutching their sides with laughter. One of the many highlights was when the band s …

Philadelphia born and raised, a Presbyterian minister adopted this illegitimate child of a jazz musician.
