Jazz pianist Lenore Raphael has been named Artistic Director of a new jazz series, which will begin on Sunday, February 11, 2007. at St. Michael's church & Parish House in New york City. The church has long been involved with many aspects of music and extending it to jazz is an exciting prospect.
Jeff Miller, church General Manager and organist/Choir Master John Cantrell have been excited about the project and asked Lenore to do this because of her experience, not only as a performing and recording artist, but as a concert producer as well.
Ms. Raphael's first concert will be with her trio, Hilliard Greene on bass and Rudy Lawless on drums and there will be some surprise guests as well. Maxx Myrick, jazz director of XM satellite radio's Real Jazz will be hosting the event.
Ms. Raphael stated "The church's concert room is particularly suited to this with its stage, great acoustics, 7 foot Yamaha piano and ample seating for guests. I am excited to do this and intend to make it a wonderful cultural event for the upper westside of New York City. We will have some wonderful artists performing here in the coming months".
Choirmaster John Cantrell will be recording the concert. Ms. Raphael stated that if the acoustics are as good as we believe, artists might opt to record or videotape their performances there in the future.
St. Michael's is located at 225 West 99th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
