Smooth Jazz makes a triumphant return to St. Louis this summer and we have Rick Sanborn to thank. To create Rick Sanborn’s Smooth Summer Party, Sanborn persuaded Jazz Cruises, LLC to bring the two hottest smooth jazz packages to The Pageant for back-to-back Friday nights this summer. On July 14, Guitars and Saxes, which was standing room only at The Pageant last year, returns with a star-studded lineup of Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot, Jeff Golub and Peter White. The following Friday night, July 21, the Rendezvous All Stars make their St. Louis debut with Kirk Whalum, Jonathan Butler, Wayman Tisdale and Brian Simpson. Both concerts will be held at the Pageant at 6161 Delmar in University City, Missouri and start at 8PM.
A favorite of St. Louis radio, Rick Sanborn has continually brought the best in live music to St. Louis audiences. His voice and presence at local events are synonymous with major artists, sell-out concerts and great jazz. After more than a year without a smooth jazz station in St. Louis, Rick Sanborn has answered the requests of fans and has once again brought music to the masses.
When asked why he chose to launch a series of smooth concerts in St. Louis, Sanborn said, "No city in America has a richer history of jazz. Whether it was the days of Gaslight Square, the heritage of Miles Davis or the honky tonks across the river, St. Louis and jazz go together. And with the stars of today, there is melody and song as well as artistry in every tune. Despite the lack of any commercial radio station featuring this music, modern jazz thrives in the community. Everywhere I go, people ask me-what happened and what can we do about getting this fantastic music back on the air.’"
"That is one of my motivations for doing this concert series," said Sanborn. "First and foremost, I just want to entertain fans who remember the magic that happens when the pros play 'live' smooth jazz music in St. Louis. Second, I hope to catch the attention of those in the community who might want to consider bringing back the ultra-cool vibe of smooth jazz to a spot on the radio dial. In any event, we will have a blast, as eight of the most revered names in smooth jazz come to St. Louis for a very special series of great music."
