This special show salutes the great days of The Village Gate where people could dance all night to great "live" music from the finest salsa and jazz musicians in the world!

Art D’Lugoff’s Village Gate at the corner of Bleecker and Thompson reigned for 36 years as the "number one jazz showcase in the number one jazz city in the world."

The Gate’s "Salsa Meets Jazz" Series was the preeminent series in New York City and probably the country that celebrated and paid homage to Latin music. For more than 20 years and up until 1993 (the series was dormant from 1970-1980), the series paired "the finest salsa orchestras with the finest jazz musicians and let them find common ground" as the New York Times stated.

Started by famed disc jockey Symphony Sid Torin and music entrepreneur, Jack Hooke. First they presenting straight Latin but after being deluged with calls from jazz musicians to play with the great Latin musicians, they evolved the series into the place where "salsa meets jazz."

World-renowned stars Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Eddie Palmieri, and dozens more performed at the Gate often joining prominent jazz musicians Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, McCoy Tyner and others.

Simultaneously, performing in Lucille's Restaurant directly across from the main space at B.B. Kings Blues Club will be the sizzling Latin Jazz sounds of "Afro-Bop.". An Afro-Cuban Jazz sextet led by the legendary trumpeter Manny Duran.
