Award-winning photographer Steven Forster won the 2003 Alpha Award for a photograph of Grammy winning jazz legend Al Hirt with Bourbon Street icon Chris Owens. The Fashion Group International of New Orleans hosted the 18th annual Alpha Awards gala for fashion and design at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel Saturday night September 27, 2003. The Fashion Group International of New Orleans region includes: Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Florida Panhandle and Southern Alabama. Forster created the 3ft by 5 ft color image of Hirt and Owens for an exhibition "The Jazz Lenses" at John Stinson Fine Arts held during the 2003 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Singer Fredy Omar known in New Orleans as "The Latin King of New Orleans" told Forster, "I was mesmerized by it, I thought it was a painting." Steven Forster is a New Orleans native and has been a professional photographer for more than twenty years. His work is in public and private collections, among them the Historic New Orleans Collection, as well as exhibiting at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Mario Villa Gallery in New Orleans and Chicago. He has had more than eight thousand photographs published worldwide--for, among others, the A&E Network, People Magazine, Court TV, the Associated Press, Fox Sports, Elle Magazine, TV Guide, Washington Monthly, The Times-Picayune, Gambit and Figaro newspapers, New Orleans Magazine, Les Beaux Arts and Women's Wear Daily. He was Photo Editor for Roll Call newspaper in Washington, D.C. Forster is the featured photographer in the original college textbook the "Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist", by Margaret R. Lazzari. Steven was the last person known to have photographed Ethel Merman.
