Jazz Breakthroughs at Merkin Concert Hall

The Kaufman Center presents Jazz Breakthroughs with host, radio personality and jazz historian Phil Schaap, Monday, March 3 and Monday, March 17 at 8 PM. On March 3, Schaap hosts an evening of music from the 1920s "Jazz Age". Featuring the greatest modern exponent of that style, tenor guitarist/banjoist Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks, the evening will be devoted to the music of trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke. On March 17, meet Phil Schaap's All-Stars including Joe Wilder, trumpet; Wycliffe Gordon, trombone; John Bunch, piano; Greg Cohen, bass; Jackie Williams, drums; and Carol Sloane, vocals. The group will focus on The Swing Song Tradition pioneered by Billie Holiday in which each tune is a miniature jam session and the singer molds and reshapes the songs lyrics like an instrumental soloist. Both events begin at 8 PM and include music and discussion from the stage with Phil Schaap.

Merkin Concert Hall is located at 129 West 67th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam. A 2-concert subscription is $40; Single tickets to each event are $22. Call the Box Office at (212) 501-3330. Visit the Kaufman Center website for more information.
