The Litchfield Jazz Festival makes its 8th annual appearance at the Goshen Fairgrounds August 1-3. This year’s lineup stars the great jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter, 2003 critics and readers poll Artist of the Year and Album of the Year Winner. Shorter, perhaps best known for his work with Miles Davis and Weather Report, will be honored at a Hollywood Bowl retrospective immediately following his Litchfield Jazz Festival debut with pianist Danilo Perez, drummer Brian Blade and bassist John Patitucci. Also on this year’s jazz fest roster are Grammy nominated, pianist of the year Brad Mehldau and his trio, the Heath Brothers, the Mulgrew Miller Quintet, Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana, vocalist Kevin Mahogany, the piano-guitar duo Benny Green and Russell Malone (who first appeared at the festival in Diana Krall’s Band in 1997), Matt Wilson Quartet, the great blues man Taj Mahal and the new jam band sensation Soulive.
The Litchfield Jazz Festival announces the opening of registration for its summer institutes, The Litchfield Jazz Festival Summer Music School and Greenhouse the new Litchfield Jazz Festival Summer Dance Institute at The Forman School in Litchfield, CT. The Music School, runs form July 20-August 1, and its star studded faculty includes saxophonists Don Braden, Jimmy Greene, Steve Wilson, Clair Daly, Jane Bunnett, pianists Ted Rosenthal, Dave Beckman, Xavier Davis, Dena DeRose, drummers Matt Wilson, Cecil Brooks III, trumpeters Ray Vega, Brian Lynch, Joe Magnarelli and many others.
Greenhouse will be headed up by choreographer Earl Mosley. Earl and his team of top-flight dancers will offer ballet, tap, modern, hip-hop and African dance to students of all ages from July 8 through August 1. Collectively, the faculty has past and present affiliations with The Ailey School, Ballet Hispanico, Donald Byrd, Sadlers Wells, and more. M’Bewe Escobar, the African instructor, appeared in the movie Fame. Rounding out the group is a local resident, tap instructor Kim D’Andrea. Kim’s credits include work with the Radio City Rockettes and 15 years of running her own school in Litchfield, CT. All dance students, like those of the jazz fest music school, will perform on their own stage at The Litchfield Jazz Festival.
