SUBJECT: Hawaii D.O.E. with G. F. Mlely Add Nation’s First Songwriting Workshop to Curriculum in a Secondary School
DATES: 8 Weekly Sessions, January 22, 2003-March 11, 2003
A pilot songwriting workshop program for the Hawaii Department of Education begins this month at Kaimuki High School in Honolulu. This program is also first of its kind nationally to be added to the curriculum within a secondary school in the public sector.
The songwriting program will be conducted by internationally acclaimed pianist-composer and songwriter G. Francis Mlely. Mr. Mlely’s work has been recorded and produced by artists as diverse from one another as Freddie Hubbard, George Harrison, guitarist John Tesh, The Cunninghams, the latter on a Grammy-nominated album. Mr. Mlely has also conducted the Pacific Songwriters Workshop in both California and Hawaii.
In authorizing the program, State Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto recognized the "unusual and unique opportunity for our students to acquire the skills and knowledge related to one of Hawaii’s music standards."
Coordinating the program is Mr. Andres Libed, Educational Specialist for Music, who also manages the Artists in the Schools program. Participating in the inaugural event will be students of Mr. Darryl Loo, music teacher at Kaimuki High School.
