The Sexiest Jazz Vocal of The Year

Yorkshire born jazz singer Clare Teal has been named as having the sexiest voice in jazz. In an independent poll of jazz fans commissioned by Berkshire company Active Marketing 27% named Clare Teal’s "California Dreamin’" as the sexiest song of the year. The jazz fans were stopped at random outside major jazz retailers including HMV and Virgin Megastore and asked to name their top five sexiest jazz vocals. The answers ranged from classic artists like Nina Simone and Billie Holiday to contemporary stars such as Claire Martin, Barb Jungr, and Stacey Kent but the most popular choice by far was Teal.

"California Dreamin’", which is taken from Teal’s latest album "Orsino’s Songs", was picked up on by BBC Radio 2’s leading jazz promoter Michael Parkinson who has played songs from the album regularly on his Sunday radio show. The exposure shot Teal and "California Dreamin’" to prominence and it was soon playing on radio stations throughout the UK. This undoubtedly helped put Teal’s name in front of a wider audience. Teal signed to Candid Records only eighteen months ago, has already released two highly acclaimed albums and looks set to become one of Britain’s most popular jazz singers. Her vocal strength and choice of songs, including several self - written, show an unusual confidence for such a young singer. At twenty-nine Teal already shows a mature and unique talent that seems to be going from strength to strength.

After all the nominations were collected the top five sexiest jazz vocals in 2002 were:

1. Clare Teal California Dreamin’
2. Peggy Lee - Fever
3. Diana Krall The Look Of Love
4. Jane Monheit More Than You Know
5. Billie Holiday That Ole Devil Called Love
