I recently checked out the Jeff Chin Trio at Shanghai 1930 in the SOMA District of San Francisco. The group is a Trio with Jeff Chin on piano, Ron Belcher on bass, and Billy Johnson on drums. The group even had caught reknown jazz producer Orrin Keepnews's ear as well and he came to check them out that same night which was pretty exciting.
Jeff Chin normally is very heavily informed by R&B and it was very cool to see him do pretty much straight ahead jazz. He has a really lovely touch and is very musically expressive. I would very much like to see him again in this capacity because he has a terrific straight-ahead jazz style. I *loved* is the drummer Billy Johnson. I heard him once before and I am really taken by his sensitivity to the music and ability to play in a variety of situations including this very intimate space. Ron Belcher is an excellent player as well and rounded out the group nicely. The group sounded terrific and is allegedly negotiating with Mr. Keepnews to produce their first CD. If you get the chance to go check this band out, they are worth it.
