Telepathy Records is pleased to announce the release of Centric, the debut album from alto saxophonist/composer Pete Robbins, on sale now online at store.telepathyrecords.com
Produced by Robbins, and featuring eight of his original compositions, the album demonstrates his unique take, as composer and performer, on the familiar jazz quintet format. The result is a dynamic, groove-charged collection of intricate melodies & textures, which serve as understated framing to Robbins' liquid, searching improvisational voice, backed by an unpredictable, lively rhythm section.
The album features legendary NYC Records recording artist George Garzone on tenor saxophone, with Mike Gamble on guitar, Chris Van Voorst Van Beest on bass, and Pete Zimmer on drums. Centric was recorded & mixed by Peter Kontrimas at PBS Studios, Westwood, MA.
From the liner notes by Paul Bley:
"[Pete] doesn't suffer from the usual jabbering-at-the-mouth, like the player who can't play compositionally. Pete's improvisation with a rhythm section, too, is strong and unique. He composes as he goes, using all the aesthetics of good composition: substantive ideas and development, freshness and control. On this record he's trying to do two things at once. Compose, and improvise. That duality, though, is easy and comfortable for him."
