One liners about 'One of a kinders'

CD Review/Bill Evans/'You Must Believe In Spring'/ Warner Bros/R273719

Even posthumously, Bill Evans still remains the penultimate pivotal jazz pianist innovator of the 20'th century. He & his trio define how the jazz trio should be presented. This CD is and has always been a favorite of this reviewer......

CD Review/Jack McDuff/ 'The Prestige Years'/Prestige 24287-2

B3 colossus McDuff offered his bandstand as a forum to the many 'up & comers,' i.e. Ammons, Jimmy Forrest, Benson, et al.......Giving these wondrous players a school to transcend their faith in music, with determination, and an utter sense of swing & musical groove....

CD Review/Dave Brubeck/ 'Private Brubeck Remembers'/Telarc

It was destined that Brubeck become the role-model-mentor he has become to the many assorted jazz musicians (of all genres) who have followed him to the present day. Listening to some of these 'earlier' renderings left me with this certain sense, that here was & is a man who creates his own 'cutting edge' as he continues to evolve into the consummate composer/jazz musician that he has developed into, in 2004...

CD Review/'The Rosemary Clooney Show'/Concord2238-2

Sinatra, Torme,' Damone, Clooney.......This was the era of the 'saloon singer.' Michael Feinstein has compiled 'the best of the best.' in the guise of 'Rosie' for us, & we're none the worse for the musical journey. Rosemary always carried herself in a musically sophisticated manner, exemplified by her take of the great ballad 'Tenderly.' There are few pop singers who inspire the expectations one can gleen from music, other than Rosemary Clooney.....She's a true national treasure.

CD Review/Ann Hampton Callaway/'Slow'/Shanachie5118

She's charmingly beautiful.......Add to that musically witty & provoking.......Vocally ideal, absolute, & karmic......Possessing a vibrato that always takes you somewhere nice. This is the masterful vocalise of the singular composer-chanteuse, Ann Hampton Callaway.....

CD Review/Cynthia Hart/'Let Me Make Music In Your Life'/ CH4575

This gifted composer-vocalist tempers all her original renditions with a well honed voice........Her songs painted with feeling & emotion.......Augmented by her energetic, elegant & smooth full bodied phrasing. I think we'll keep her......

CD Review/Peter Christlieb/'Apogee'/Warner BrosR273723

I'm bewitched by Peter's gifted ear & probing harmonic sense........Enhanced only by the rhythmic drive of his horn lines. His brilliance is in contrast to the 'wet,' 'reedy,' almost too 'breathy' sax utterance one sometimes will hear out there in the ether. God, I love him.....

CD Review/Erroll Garner/'The Greatest Garner'/Atlantic73713

Wow!! Does this bring me back to my old Boston days when I'd catch Garner @ some of the now defunct jazz venues he was wont to play in. It's almost too patronizing to launch into copious kudos about this legend. Suffice it to say he had his niche. He influenced a whole generation.....And, Erroll still 'lives' through this re-release.......

CD Review/Joshua Breakstone/'A Jamais'/Capri740652

Joshua is truly one of my favorite jazz guitarists with a capability of making a trio sound like a quintet with his remarkably cogent artistic abilities. Completely at home with jazz harmony, he enchants us with his plaintive, wistful guitar craft..........Along with a panoply of 'mood' contained within his melodies. Well done!!

CD Review/Colin Lazzerini/'Not Nothing Nowhere'/Route001

I have to confess I've never heard of vocalist Colin Lazzerini, but I'll also admit that I'm knocked out by his prowess @ the jazz style of vocalise. This is a guy who let's it all hang out. This is someone who will ply you with simple yet beautifully contrapuntal vocal improvisations, backed up by his tight, razor sharp jazz group.

CD Review/Steve Gardena/Panoramic/171CD

Here some relatively new jazz guitar blood.......One of the 'new kids on the block' as it were. Bebop is Gardena's calling, playing his ax with an exotic, dynamic texture, & a compelling harmonic repertoire.....

CD Review/Eli Degibri/'In The Beginning'/170CD

You are taken aback right away by reedman Degibri's chromatic passages & harmonic experimentation. Loaded with an exploritive, innovative musical mind, Eli dives into his music with horn lines that will intimidate you. His rhythmic development is prodigious. All in all, this is an experiment that works.....

CD Review/Tom McCarthy/'Spark & Luminance'/CVM002

Tom McCarthy's jazz guitar craft is raw & primitively powerful, incorporating a precise jazz delivery. I am impressed with Tom's musical flexibility, belieing his formidable musicianship. This is an artist who can deliver a lyrical seductive sound...... Demonstrate a virtuosic technique........And a rhythmic vitality that is stunning.....
