Clare Teal, the rising star of UK jazz vocal, who recently hit the headlines with a ground-breaking TV advertising campaign with digital broadcaster Music Choice, has achieved another first. At very short notice, and probably due to the huge ammount of attention she has been attracting in the UK over the last few weeks, Clare was asked to do an interview and play a track live on air for BBC Radio London. She is the first jazz performer to be featured on the primetime Lisa Ianson show. She and Lisa got on so well that the interview was extended and Clare was given the chance to perform two songs. She, and her regular guitarist Nils Solberg, played beautiful arrangements of "Messin' With Fire" and the title track from Clare's Debut album on Candid records "That's The Way It Is".
"It was really quite scarey at first, especially as I had to go straight into a song...but as soon as Lisa and I started to chat I knew we were going to get on well, and to be honest, I completely forgot that thousands of people were listening. Nils was great, I called him just a few hours before and asked if he would accompany me, he is so cool about these things, and calmly agreed. We rehearsed the songs - completely different arrangements from my usual ones - in the waiting room at the radio station with all these BBC people just wandering past going about their business totally ignoring me! then went in and did them..it was a great experience, and it was nice to see some of the BBC guys turned up at my gig that night! at the Bull's Head in Barnes."
Clare Teal will be appearing at The Bull's Head in Barnes (London) every second Friday of the month for the rest of 2002. For more information see her website which gives day to day information about her performances.
