Cutting edge, jazz guitarist Corey Christiansen is still in his early thirties but musically he has been a long time in the making. Growing up in a home filled with music, Corey began to play at the early age of five receiving excellent instruction and inspiration from his father, Mike Christiansen, Chairman of Guitar Studies and professor at Utah State University. Since those early days Corey has developed a style of his own that is recognized as one of the most notable in jazz. He has built a career that allows him to perform throughout the world with many of today’s most respected jazz musicians. It is no wonder that Mel Bay Records is proud to launch their new jazz label, Guitar Sessions, with the release of Corey Christiansen’s new CD, Awakening.
Corey took the opportunity to record Awakening in a place that was familiar to him, Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida. There, he was able to record with long time friends and colleagues Danny Gottlieb on drums, Per Danielsson on piano, and Mark Neuenschwander on bass. Corey explores all avenues on this release from playing Coltrane changes over the bridge of jazz standard All the Things You Are to his original modal composition Little Hands, Big Dreams, written for and dedicated to his two-year-old son. From the beginning, the goal was to produce an album which conveyed the intensity of Corey’s playing which just burns.
Aside from his recent work in the studio, Corey had the opportunity to visit Australia for a two-week tour of conservatories and music stores. He performs at many notable festivals and venues including John Pisano’s Guitar Night at Spazio’s in Los Angeles, the Jazz Café at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy, the Classic American Guitar Show, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, the Daytona Beach Jazz Festival, and the St. Louis Jazz Festival. He has also performed and/or recorded with many outstanding jazz artists including Jimmy Bruno, John Pisano, Willie Akins, Sid Jacobs, Jack Wilkins, and Danny Gottlieb. In addition to being a sought after musician and recording artist, Corey has been Senior Music Editor and Advisor to Product Development for Mel Bay Publications, Inc. since 2001. To date he has written over forty publications for Mel Bay Publications, Inc. and has offered countless guitar clinics and concerts across the country and beyond.
Corey has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Utah State University and a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from the University of South Florida.
Corey endorses Buscarino Guitars, Clarus amplifiers and Raezer’s Edge speaker cabinets.
