Randy Colville - Bandleader / Clarinette / Saxes

Over a period of about 25 years, I became a great fan and friend of Jazz Clarinettist Randy Colville. Randy was an unassuming man, like most of the truly great players are, but his musical knowledge and talent were light years ahead of most of his piers. Apart from his own band the "Colville collection" Randy played with the greatest of British Jazz musicians and was admired by them all.

He played for many years with the "Midnight follies Orchestra" The Alan Elsdon band, plus with at times, the Legendary Humphrey Lyttelton Band, alongside his great friend Pete Strange. Pete being Humphrey's right hand man, arranging and playing superb Trombone for many years.

I just enjoyed his company as well as getting great pleasure hearing him play. He was married to Joan and has two fine children, Ian & Polly. The whole of the Jazz scene in England will miss the wonderful talents of a great man. Randy died of liver failure after about a year's illness. His funeral / cremation today (the 2nd January 2004) was packed solid.....a classical quintet played live music and the reception was held in a local pub...in the Medway Town area of England. He would have approved of that!

Rest in peace Randy.

I for one will miss you greatly.
