Creative flutist/composer Nicole Mitchell will return to New York, her home state from early childhood, to present exciting and original music in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Nicole Mitchell was honored in Downbeat Critic’s Poll 2001 and 2002, and has been an integral part of Chicago’s experimental music scene for the last decade. On June 6th and 7th, Mitchell will hook-up with New York talents David Pleasant, multifaceted percussionist, and Hilliard Green, luminary bassist, to play at Brooklyn’s newest Jazz café, the Jazz Spot (Brooklyn). At CBGB Lounge, on June 9th, the new innovative alto saxaphonist Matana Roberts will join the Nicole Mitchell Trio as a special guest.

A younger member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), Mitchell has been breaking new ground since her debut as composer and bandleader, with Vision Quest (Dreamtime, 2001). Afrika Rising (Dreamtime), her newest CD release, was featured in Downbeat’s May 2003 Issue, given Critic’s Choice in the Chicago Reader, and made the top ten with the CMJ charts. Mitchell has performed in international festivals throughout Europe, including Italy, England, Scotland, France, Russia and she recently performed with composer/trombonist George Lewis in Munich, Germany. Mitchell celebrates the African American cultural legacy by creating music that embraces the ancient past and paint visions of a positive future. Her music is the weaving of swing, blues, avante garde, bebop, African rhythms, Eastern modes and Western classical sounds.

David Pleasant is a multifaceted percussion virtuoso, rhythm effects vocalist, avant guarde performance artist, and lecturer. Born in Savannah, Georgia and raised in Mcintosh County, David Pleasant grew up immersed in the rich Gullah /Geechee culture, which thrives in that area. Rhythms of the Gullah (Georgia and South Carolina Sea Island) culture, which include body percussion and shout, inform Pleasant's artistic perspective. Pleasant, who has been a local New York musician for a number of years, is the founder of Riddimathon! which presents a dynamic interactive journey in music.

Bassist, Hilliard (Hill) Greene has been performing professionally for over twenty years. His emphasis is wide-ranging, including: classical, jazz, rock, blues, R&B as well as the music of other continents and US regions. Greene has performed and/or recorded with many great artists including: Jimmy Scott, Cecil Taylor, Gloria Lynne, Jacky Terrasson, The Inkspots, Rashied Ali, Leroy Jenkins, Jimmy Ponder, Eddie Gladden, Vanessa Rubin, Yoron Israel, Kenny Barron, Dave Douglas, and Cindy Blackman.
