Vibraphone lovers rejoice! When you listen to Milt Jackson or Lionel Hampton for example, it is usually in a group setting. John Mark has decided to go at it in a beautiful solo recording. It's so nice to hear the vibes in all its wonderful sonorous glory. Notes get a chance to play with one another in beautiful harmony, as evidenced on the sympathetic version of Bill Evan's, Very Early. Soft lilting sounds from Piper's Musser vibes capture the true essence of this classic piece. It's like basking in a sea of endless musical beauty. John Mark covers another Bill Evan's composition (Turn Out The Stars), with similar effect.
There are six original compositions on this CD. My favorite is, "Just A Step Away". It's a piece that flows in and out of the melody, and highlights Piper's songwriting skills. Never overstating the melody, and always flowing with the melody to create a satisfying piece that lingers with the listener long after the piece as ended.
"Amazing Grace" has been played often in various musical settings. This version begins with a single mallet introduction introducing the main melody, which leads into a warm and flowing excursion that is close to heaven.
This CD is highly recommended not only for the vibes lover, but also for the music lover who enjoys fine melody, and skilled writing.
