Vibist Bill Ware gets around: his band Vibes (reviewed nearby, on the site), the Jazz Passengers, and this quartet. Where the Vibes album "With Drawn" is more varied & experimental, Keeping Up With.... is more of a straight-ahead album in the mid-60s Blue Note/Atlantic mode. "So I Can Live Again" is as genial and swinging as the best Bobby Hutcherson, with a breezy summertime melody that makes you feel like your sipping cocktails on the Riviera. "Speak With Helen" has a hint of Latin rhythm and "Wednesday Afternoon" is a haunting, late-nite ballad de amor gone wrong. Pianist Crayford has that Dave Brubeck/Horace Silver lyrical quality, and what they used to call "the rhythm section" swings with such easy grace it's hard to believe it's 1999. Keep summer around your abode all year 'round with this album.
