Jaz Sawyer and Irvin Mayfield (both leaders still in their twenties) delivers a distinctive set of standards that is associated with the established masters of trumpet and drums: Miles Davis. Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Max Roach and Andrew Cyrille. With them are two highly respected jazz artist, Pianist Jacky Terrasson, and Bassist Rodney Whitaker. Armed with tremendous talent, diversity, and chemistry the foursome are Live at The Blue Note jazz club in New York.
20/20 Live at the Blue Note begins with The Miles Davis classic "Four", gets the set off a rollicking start, After the Head, Mayfield bolts in to High Energy. Solos by Sawyer and Terrasson's follow in order. "Stella By Starlight", gets the Milesian treatment, from a Terrasson's lithe introduction to the Delight.
Of course Dizzy gets his due with "A Night in Tunisia" and "Con Alma" Together the four musicians introduce the listeners to a hot night in the tropics of "Tunisia." Con Alma gives you the feel of the Caribbean. The trumpet-drum combination is exhilarating as Mayfield and Sawyer add their own signature effects for good measure. The set closes with Andrew Cyrille's "Shell" consisting of wide intervallic exercises from Mayfield, as well as a nice ebb and flow from the guys over a underpinning by Sawyer. This combination of individually remarkable artists will provide a most rewarding experience for lovers of authentic jazz.
