As you are probably aware, Mel Torme passed away June 5th at age 73 having left us a wealth of recorded performances. This reissue from the Bethlehem Archives is certainly a fine representation of the singer's work with a mid sized jazz orchestra. The band is the Marty Paich Dek-tette featuring such jazz luminaries as Pete Candoli, Don Fagerquist, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Red Mitchell, Jack Montrose, Mel Lewis and more. Marty Paich is, of course, the pianist.
The tunes include: Lulu's Back In Town, When The Sun Comes Out, Sing For Your Supper, The Blues, The Carioca, Lullaby of Birdland, I Love To Watch the Moonlight, Keeping Myself For You, When April Comes Again, The Lady Is A Tramp, Fascinating Rhythm and my favorite, I Like To Recognize The Tune by Rodgers and Hart. This was the atmosphere that Mel Torme truly preferred. Good tunes and a fine group of swinging jazz giants. We'll miss you Mel!
