Those who view Bud Shank as some bland, bloodless "West Coast" player, this CD reissue will come as a revelation. Shank forsakes the flute this go-round and concentrates on some sizzling alto sax a la Art Pepper and the neglected Sonny Criss. Shank BURNS on this date: sharp, mercurial, Parker-inspired bebop sax, with an energized, almost agitated roughness to his tone. For this album, the band was Kenny Barron, Ron Carter & Al Foster, who swing like mad and play with a confident cohesiveness. True, this program holds few surprises - one original, many unsurprising standards, including the done-to-death "Bouncing With Bud" (how come more folks don't dip into the songbooks of Tadd Dameron, Kenny Dorham, Benny Carter, Andrew Hill, Lennie Tristano? Just wondering.... ), but those who can't get enough of the hot-bop stylings of the aforementioned Alto Masters & folks who've been aching to hear Shank cut loose will be groovin' high, maan.
