Bobby Lewis has created a winner in this CD, and it is one you can listen to again and again with total pleasure, and relaxation. Pianist Jim Ryan adds sparkle and joy to the tracks with his superb playing, and joining the group is Thomas Kini on electric bass, Jeff Stitely on drums, tabla, udu, Curtis Robinson on guitar, Alejo Poveda on percussion and congas (what a conga player, too!), Pat Mallinger on sax, the lovely Bonnie Herman with her sensual voice, John Allred on trombone, Paul Wertico on drums, John Bany on acoustic bass, Jim Beebe on trombone, Chuck Hedges on clarinet, Ruben Alvarez on timbales and percussion, Geraldo de Oliveira on percussion, Rob Kassinger on acoustic bass, Lawrie Bloom on bass clarinet, and the clarinet mastery of Larry Combs, John Yeh, Julie DeRoche, and Burl Lane; Dick Boyell is the arranger/conductor. This is a jazz CD sure to please all jazz fans.
Two compositions by Bobby Lewis, composed while on a journey to India in 1998, appear here: "Nalini" and "Jasmine." Dizzy Gillespie's composition, "Tanga," is performed with much depth and magic. A sense of joy and what jazz can do is very evident in the other songs, "Just Friends," "Saudade," "Some Other Time," "Nature Boy," among others. Claudio Roditi's composition, "The Monster and the Flower" is also presented in one of the best recordings ever made of it! Each selection is a gem; very complete, very satisfying, very generous. Bobby Lewis, his trumpet, and musicians are at their best. A top-notch jazz journey for the night hours and whenever good music is desired for listening enjoyment. Pure pleasure, this one is, for sure! Get a copy for yourself soon! A good gift for a friend, lover, or acquaintance, too!
