This 11 selection CD is a delight to play! The musicians are top-notch, and the jazz swings very well indeed! These are old classics in the 1930s jazz era modernized with a fresh, imaginative jazz touch that takes the listener away on a wild nostalgia journey! Here are some of the songs with the original year: "Old Man Blues" (Duke Ellington, 1930), "Limehouse Blues" (Furber/Braham, 1931), "Echoes of Harlem" (Duke Ellington and Cootie Williams, 1936), "Texas Shuffle" (Evans, 1938), "Jeep's Blues" (Ellington/Hodges, 1938), "Dawn on the Desert" (CharlieShavers,1938). Matt Darriau takes his group to new heights of interaction and jazz expression with this CD, performing on saxophones, and clarinet. Other musicians on this CD are Andy Lester on baritone sax, clarinet; Frank London, trumpet and mutes; Art Baron, trombone and mutes; Joe Fitzgerald on bass; Ben Sher on guitar; George Schuller on drums, Peck Allmond on tenor saxophone on tracks 5,7,9 and trumpet on tracks 2,5; Anthony Coleman playing excellent jazz piano on tracks 2,5,9. This is an outstanding update to some old jazz classics and well-worth buying for a friend or home. It would be a good item to have in the jazz section of the Public Library. For a good time, and jazz pleasures to the ears, this CD is worth having and playing often! Excellent CD! An enjoyable CD any time!
