Tribute to Chet Baker by Colin Steele & Cathie Rae

Chet Baker's style of playing trumpet appealed to many listeners for many years. Not one for technical brilliance but rather a master at creating moods and not only playing the note but playing within and around the note. This recording is a moving tribute to Chet. Cathie's vocals capture the essence of Chet's spirit throughout these recordings.

"Let's Get Lost" introduces us to the band with a mid tempo rendition. Opening with Colin Steele's trumpet before Cathie joins in for some vocal meandering. Setting the tone for the rest of the session, we all get lost in this wonderful music lovingly played by this duo along with an excellent group.

"My Funny Valentine" long a favorite when associating the music with Chet Baker is played by Colin and pianist Dave Milligan, this version is certainly one of the highlights. Passionately playing between them result in a most satisfying session.

"For Minors only" is an upbeat arrangement showcasing Colin's trumpet prowess and technique. Chet would be proud of this version. Colin captures Chet's spirit beautifully. Having the time of his life, you can tell that Colin is enjoying himself exploring the piece before Dave enters with some swinging piano.

Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" begins with a funky bass line from Ronnie Rae with John Rae's drumming grooving along. Colin's trumpet is haunting in that he captures Chet's sound and spirit, while taking us along for a musical journey.

"My Ideal" is another chestnut from the Baker archives featuring Colin's trumpet. Always searching, phrasing and exploring, Colin again takes the listener into a lyrical oasis.

Sandy Wright's gentle guitar introduces us to "You're Mine You". Cathie's soft, warm vocals state the melody and again conveying a mood so beautiful. Cathie and Sandy work well together here always remaining in control, Sandy's sound, so rich, complementing Cathie's voice throughout the piece.

If you like Chet Baker, check out this recording. There is so much music to be had. Not just notes being played but moods created, resulting in a joyous listening experience. With Cathie's talented vocal abilities and Colin's excellent trumpet work, these two hit on all cylinders. Don't forget, this is a tribute album. Not ones to imitate Chet's sound but rather celebrate Chet's sound, these two have created a musical statement that can be enjoyed for many years.
