This release has alittle something for anyone with an interest in Contemporary Jazz. Jay Beckenstein is at his very best in "Silk and Satin" putting together an interesting "big band" sound that just about knocks your socks off. Scott Ambush does a wild job on the bass and Tom Schuman is extremely versatile, throughout. In my opinion, the band departs from its "norm" when doing "Silk and Satin", as well as "Breezeway". I found those two songs to be extremely robust and well written.....a sure "10" on my scale. Other well-done pieces include "Havana Moonlight", "Springtime Laughter" and "Sierra". All are quite origional and bring out the very best in a group that I felt had lost some of its "luster" in the past couple of years. Julio Fernandez is a superb guitarist throughout, as is the drummer Joel Rosenblatt. This group demonstrated, in this CD, just how great they can be....lets just hope that it continues on for years to come. There may be better "hardcore jazz" saxists in the world (arguably)....but, overall, Beckenstein is hard to beat!! On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate "Got The Magic" a solid 8.
