The Road Home by Tina Lear

Tina Lear’s new release is a truly refreshing approach to a blend of jazz and modern folk music. The accompaniment varies considerably from track to track and includes trios, quartets, quintets and a big band. With the exception of "Flying Solo", all compositions are Tina’s originals.

Tina Lear is an inventive vocalist and pianist. Her vocal style reminded me of the works of such stars as Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell and the jazz touch of Annie Ross. Her original lyrics are intelligent and "from the heart."

I was especially impressed with "The Village is Ours" with a big band background including one of my favorite sax players, the great Tony Campise. Unfortunately, Tony does not solo on the tune.

The Santa Monica singer was drawn into music at an early age and played classical piano until she first heard Joni Mitchell. Tina immediately began writing songs of her own. Incidentally, the CD includes a booklet containing the lyrics for all 13 tracks. The album should have universal appeal to those who appreciate a novel treatment of fresh new folk-jazz performed with the ultimate of good taste.
