Supergenerous is a duo: Kevin Breit, guitarist and player-of-stringed-things and Cyro Baptista, percussionist. What looks like it might be some facile world-beat fusion fluff turns out to be an all-almost-all-instrumental gem. (Smoky-voiced jazz singer Cassandra Wilson gives "Home On The Range" a sultry recital, as if she were in the Great Caberet-At-The-End-Of-Time. Git along, indeed.) Breit plays with both incredible technique AND admirable restraint-he doesn't feel the need to "dazzle" the listener with 100-notes-per-second. He calls to mind a more-earthy Ralph Towner or Johnny McLaughlin after a month of hanging out with Norman Blake and Chet Atkins. The medley "Dreamin' Of A Train/Take the 'A' Train" and "Caravan/Camel, Sand And Caravan" feature delicate and hearty acoustic slide playing worthy of Ry Cooder or Mississippi Fred McDowell. "God's Parking Lot" is a shimmering dream-scape: surreal dub-like production, eerie, distant electric guitar and unsettling percussion. "Brohemia" features picking that brings to mind Celtic folk, South American charango, Appalachian dulcimer and West African guitar music-but it's all grounded by Baptista's gently insinuating, Samba-tinged rhythms. SUPERGENEROUS is a delight because it has enough twists and quirks to keep things interesting yet conjures a cozy (though not overly "mellow"), good-natured ambiance. With this disc, it always sounds like summertime. (If you like Arild Andersen's IF YOU LOOK FAR ENOUGH (ECM)...well, that's a hint.)
