First off, let me tell you that Baatin is a multi-talented one man show. Not only does he sing and play various keyboards, but he also plays flute/ soprano, and guitar in a relaxed and seamless style. Enter Baatin's groove and you are in for a honey dripping aural adventure.
"Sunday Brunch" is a laid back lazy tempo style vehicle that reminds one of Joe Sample's easy going style. Baatin has a light silky touch that not only sounds good but is also therapeutic in that the listener is totally relaxed and always wanting more. Baatin's wonderful flute excursion halfway throughout the piece, showcases his arranging talent as well.
Baatin plays guitar over a funky rhythm on "The Uphill Road". A melodic number featuring Baatin's well executed chops. Always aware of the groove with a nod to George Benson and Grant Green, two practitioners of this style of playing. Baatin rides the groove with taste and reserve.
Grover Washington's influence on Baatin is featured on "For Grover". Grover influenced many a musician with his unique style. Wesley is featured on percussion, complementing Baatin's soprano sax as well as flute playing.
Portia Jackson offers up some tasty vocals on "Play 2 Win". Baatin featured on Soprano sax playing ever so lightly under Jackson's vocals. Wesley also contributes on percussion.
Elegant layered vocals from Baatin begin "U Make Me Smile". Baatin's vocal inflections are relaxed and soothing, similar to the great Marvin Gaye's ability to "melt" the listener and invite whoever was willing into his musical fantasy. Baatin's frequent dips into the lower register make this a warm, easygoing tune.
Funk as always been a grooving infectious style that gets one to dancing and feeling good. "Something Funky 4 U" closes out the recording with Baatin featured on everything from Vocals to sax, bass etc... Of all the tracks on this CD, this one sums up what Baatin is all about.
Baatin has a bright future ahead of him. Producing, writing and playing so many different instruments well with great arranging goes to show how diverse and talented Baatin is. He seems to do it all. Baatin's career will build upon this recording and we can only look forward to what he has to offer in the future.
