Sketches of James by Various Artists

Just about anyone who has ever turned on a radio during the last 30 years will be familiar with the compositions of James Taylor. Having heard jazz artists perform the works of other rock & roll writers, producer Tim Weston decided to put together a compilation of James Taylor items.

Perhaps you won't find your favorite Taylor song included as the individual jazz artists were allowed to choose a composition that best fitted their own performing style. You'll find a tune list at the Koch Jazz website.

The CD kicks off with a high energy interpretation of "Steamroller" by Tower of Power with a lead vocal by Brent Carter. The New York Voices follow up with "Long Ago And Far Away" exhibiting their usual intricate style in a Darmon Meador arrangement. It's great!

Other outstanding pieces are "Secret O' Life" performed by Shirley Horn, "Fire and Rain" by Poncho Sanchez and his band, and "Nobody But You" sung by Les McCann. My personal favorite is the six minute version of "Something In The Way She Moves" played by the Mitchel Forman Trio.

If you enjoy the works of James Taylor, this album will have special appeal.
