This is the debut CD for this really fine West Coast outfit. It offers an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional jazz. The sultry vocals of Lorraine Gervais are fresh and original. The tasty mixture of genres holds the attention of the listener.
The quintet performs beautifully and give the impression that they have been together for years. The delicate balance is quite captivating and I've played this CD at least six times in the last week.
Particularly outstanding are the instrumental solos of saxophonist Gary Upton and pianist Greg Gavin. The quintet becomes a sextet on the blues offering, "Hard Drivin' Mama" when guitarist Mikail Graham is added to the group.
Lorraine Gervais is truly the centerpiece and proves her worth on such tunes as Peel Me a Grape, Black Coffee and Stanley Turrentine's Sugar. A couple of original compositions by Lorraine Gervais and Greg Gavin are offered in the form of "Cool Water" and "Rhythm Cat".
This fine CD will appeal to a wide variety of fans and I really expect it will receive considerable air play in the coming months.
