With John In Mind by Steve Heckman

Aw heck, man, this Bay Area bebopper really goes to town tipping his fedora to sax icon John Coltrane with a clutch of originals (and 2 standards) firmly in the style of Trane’s 50s Prestige recordings, where one could discern more than a taste of Dexter Gordon’s influence. With a big, gorgeous ‘n’ shiny Joe Lovano/Dex/Trane-type tone and a piano trio of sympathetic hep cats, this Steve Heckman plays some straight-down-the-middle, mainstream hard bop. While there’s nothing surprising here (darn it, they sound so good but play it kinda safe), bebop addicts will want to cop.
