The live recording, GREAT SKY RIVER, is the third release from the fusion-jam band, Jazz Is Dead. For those of you who don’t know, the band derives its name from the fact that they only play Grateful Dead songs. Although whether it’s "jazz" is debatable. Live is the perfect setting for this band. Cut loose from the confines of the studio, they burn their way through a host of Dead favorites. If you can imagine the Dead as an instrumental fusion band, then you know what to expect here. The musicians bring a wide pedigree with them: The Allman Brothers, Weather Report, the Dixie Dregs, and other high powered bands.
Highlights are many, and include taut readings of "Blues For Allah," "China Cat Sunflower," and the Dead’s own "fusion" masterpiece, "Terrapin Station." If you liked their previous two releases, or like the long instrumental jams of the Dead and the Allman Brothers, then you should find this a fascinating recording.
