Donia by Sawt el Atlas

DONIA is contemporary world jazz music from the country of Morocco, and it is an exciting debut of a group of young jazz musicians calling their group, "Sawt el Atlas." Intricate jazz patterns and a sense of fluid movement and excitement highlight this collection of 12 songs. The Egyptian Orchestra accompanies the group, and the sounds are creative and entertaining.

Selections include "Oh lady," "Mother," "The wheel turns," and the energetic "Donia," among other fine songs. The musicianship is flawless and in unison, with each performer complementing the sound of another in straight-forward harmonic inventions. An excellent example of this is found in the selection, "Mouminine," which has a playing time of 4:01. The vocal work is outstanding, and one of the songs that highlights the vocals is found in the lively "Andalucia."

From the Islamic country of Morocco comes a most entertaining collection of contemporary world jazz music. Many jazz fans will find this an exciting CD collection. Abdelkrim El Habchi excels on the piano and has some innovative piano work that is sure to entertain, and gain him international recognition.

As a world music entry, DONIA is a refreshing, welcome entry. DONIA has an abundance of appeal with its melodies. DONIA is a winner.
