The V.I.P. Club's Coconut Kiss is classic, smooth jazz instrumental. These tunes have the warm bright invitation of a child standing in a field of sunflowers with peach juice dripping down its chin. The V.I.P. Club is an ensemble founded by Wolfgang Haffner. Haffner, an experienced drummer, has toured with many well-known artists including Chaka Khan, Joe Sample, Gato Barbieri, and Michael Franks. The group includes Kim Waters on sax, Phil Upchurch and Jeff Golub on guitar, Will Lee on bass and Michael Brecker on drums and keyboards. These artists have extensive touring experience with the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, and David Bowie and it shows.
The music is easy and fun, misleadingly so. If you like these artists separately you will love them together. The title track Coconut Kiss, begins with a buoyant flourish, an announcement, an expectation. You find your spirits immediately lifting in anticipation as you wait for; you know not what, until it comes in the air very appropriately named, the mood matches the title precisely. On the third cut Warm Breeze, the sax flows through you as the percussions keep just the right rhythm; it's like afternoon delight in a hammock. Need I say more? The fourth cut, Into The Light, begins in blue introspection before the music builds into the burgeoning blushing light of a sunrise. Right On is upbeat and funky. Night Moves is slow and secretive. Altogether I truly recommend this CD. It is definitely music for a sunny top-down drive to that beach getaway, even if it is only in your mind. The music will take you there.
