Saxophonist Bill Evans has always been one that can lay down an easy soul groove that makes you feel good all night long. That groove continues with his newest release "Soul Insider." With great backup players like Ricky Peterson on the Hammond B-3 and piano and John Scofield on guitar along with vocalist Les McCann, Evans continues his mastery of the soul jazz genre with up front performances. From "Vans Joint" through "The Shorty Shuffle," Evans comes through on every track with the soulful sax playing that has made him a classic for so long. Les McCann's vocals on his two tracks, "Lose My Number" and "You Sure Look Good to Me." are as strong as ever and overall, there is not one track that doesn't hit the mark perfectly. Evans has been a consummate performer for a long time and that hasn't changed in "Soul Insider." This release is appropriately titled because Evans has and always will be the insider to great soul jazz.
