Pony’s Express by Pony Poindexter

A truly star-studded, swinging band is assembled on this reissue from 1962. A great mix of standards such as Struttin' With Some Barbecue and Basin Street Blues alongside some swinging Poindexter originals like Catin' Latin and Pony's Express make this a real treat. The selection of tunes is certainly a salute to Poindexter's hometown of New Orleans. His solo on the lazy Lanyop really seems to capture the spirit of a club late at night in the Big Easy. There's terrific playing all around on this CD with some really outstanding moments not only by Pony, but by Pepper Adams on the big baritone as well. I get the sense the musicians had a lot of fun playing on this release, it's definitely a lot of fun for the listener.
