Grupo-X is a fine new British band on the emerging London latin jazz scene. It's refreshing to see a new group debut with a CD of their own compositions. The octet is becoming a fixture at London's Jazz Café for their "Hi-Hat" and "Messin' Around" club nights. Grupo-X is a very hot band and packs an explosive punch on all tracks.
The opening song, Brand New Love features a guest vocal by Lisa Millett and is a real soul shaker. The lead vocals of Venezuelan singer, Carlos A. Pena, are equally exciting with emphasis on his "Mi Tumbao" co-written with Jonny Enright.
The ensemble passages are powerful and melodic but one can't deny the strength of soloists Enright, Corby, Peters and Beaujolais. John Crawford on the Fender Rhodes and the percussionists form the building blocks of the band. In summary, this is highly original latin jazz that just might turn you into a fan. If it doesn't move you, it might be a good idea to have a medical check-up. Perhaps you passed away without knowing it.
