Crisp and clear is the sound of the 11-track John Celona's BlueCity album "CityLights." A newly formed avante-garde music sextet, the BlueCity bring a range of classical, contemporary new music, jazz and structured improvisation experience to the table.
From the self-titled track ("CityLights") to the fast graphic score of "Networks," "CityLights" shows potential. It is commendable that Celona, Rich Lang, Don McDougall, Bruce Hurn, John Wright and Wendell Clanton would be inspired to combine their talents together. To the beginning jazz listener, this band reflects the true meaning of the word "avante-garde," a term used to reflect on post-1960s jazz and contemporary music making.
