If you enjoy contemporary jazz originals that have a taste of smoke and honey and a 1950s night club atmosphere about them, then you will discover some fine goings on with Andrew Rathbun in his new release titled SCULPTURES. There are 21 selections on this CD.
Among some of the 21 titles are found such special gems as "Sculpture," "Doves & Hawks," "Facing West," "She Screams in Whispers," "Holiday of Fools," "Fitzgerald," "At the Tip of the Island," to name a few. Overall, this is an excellent example of a young jazz composer at work composing and performing, and it is worthy of your time.
Kenny Wheeler is outstanding on his trumpet and flugelhorn solos as is Frank Carlberg on piano. Frank Carlberg brings a hint of mystery and style to his piano performances that blend easily with John Hebert on bass and Jeff Hirshfield on drums in their perfect solo work. The individual solo work is excellent, and Kenny Wheeler is a splendid new voice in contemporary jazz trumpet performances!
As a new saxophone player on the jazz scene, Andrew Rathbun is topnotch. His performances and harmony interpretations are flawless.
The musicians are creative and they have a good, solid jazz sound when playing together or in solo work. I believe Andrew Rathbun's finely crafted SCULPTURES will appeal to many different listeners for many different reasons.
Some classic solo work going on in this collection. Topnotch jazz entertainment!
