It has been five years since Gerald Albright released a solo project. Since that time, he has signed a new contract with the GRP label and his first release Groovology has brought back Albright with avengence. Performing not only on sax, but also on flute, keyboards, bass guitar and drums, Albright establishes. himself as a multi-threat. He also writes six of the ten tracks on Groovology as well as arranges three tracks and even does background vocals.

Even with all that Albright does on on Groovology, he gets help from some top people. Keyboardists Jeff Lorber and Bobby Lyle, percussionist Shelia E. and guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. are along with Albright for the ride as he touches some of the things that have influenced him throughout his career. For a man who has performed with such superstars as Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan and the Temptations, Groovologyhelps Albright thank the people who he has helped and to expand his musical image.

One of the more interesting tracks on Groovology is his take on Eric Clapton's Change the World. Albright says that he includes it here because it provides "positive feelings," especially after the events of September 11th, 2001. There is a salute to James Brown in Don't Hold Back as well as R&B tunes like Old School Jam. Albright's gospel roots are shown in the closing track We Fall Down, which he has wanted to record after it stuck in his head for over a year and a half.

Gerald Albright's versatility really shows in Groovology. His delivery is both soulful and heartfelt and was well worth the five year wait. After backing some of music's elite, Groovology will help Albright get music's elite to back him up. Gerald Albright is a classic.
