Come and Meet Me in a Dream by Sketches In Blue

Sketches in Blue is an entertaining, smooth group with an emphasis on straight-ahead/classic approach, featuring the vocals of Jeff Hedberg. Listening to Jeff Hedberg reminded me of the great talents of the late singer, Johnny Ray. There is a sensitive, romantic edge to Jeff Hedberg's voice that will attract many listeners to his jazz stylings.

John Jeffrey is a fine pianist and in top form on these songs. Jeffrey knows intuitively what form each song should take and interacts perfectly with Hedberg's voice. Lucas Kammerer on bass and Bryan Sansom on conga add to the classic touch of these performances.

Two songs which show the gifts of Jeff Hedberg on jazz vocals are the Jerome Kern song "The Way You Look Tonight" and the Arlen/Mercer masterpiece "One For My Baby And One More For The Road." The audience will enjoy all of these lovely jazz songs, and the solo work on each is superb.

There are 11 songs in the collection. Among the songs are found "Old Devil Moon," Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count," "The Way You Look Tonight," "For Heaven's Sake," "You Don't Know What Love Is," "One For My Baby And One More For The Road," "Almost Like Being In Love," "Autumn Leaves," "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing," Miles Davis' "All Blues," and "Goodbye."

Jeff Hedberg is a romantic jazz singer and his group is outstanding in their accompanying solo and group performances. The jazz audience will find many find things in this collection.

COME AND MEET ME IN A DREAM is a splendid listening adventure for all who enjoy jazz vocals. Hedberg gives a fine performance on flugelhorn with "Autumn Leaves," which leaves a pleasant feeling with the listeners, and like all the songs on this memorable collection, each will bring different intricate jazz motifs to the minds of the jazz listeners.
