Another in the outstanding series of samplers representing the many jazz labels that operate under the Fantasy Records umbrella, this one is split between Milestone, founded in 1966 by Orin Keepnews and aquired by Fantasy in 1972, and Galaxy, a label that appeared in several incarnations, the most significant of which was from 1978 to 1985, when, as a Fantasy subsidiary, the released a series of jazz albums featuring some outstanding veteran artists.
Milestone gets eleven of the sixteen tracks, and even then the selections barely scratch the surface of the label's depth. What is displayed, though, is excellent. Tracks from McCoy Tyner, Lee Konitz and Ray Nance, Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter, J.J. Johnson, Jim Hall, Thad Jones and Pepper Adams, Flora Purim, the fabled Miles Davis rhythm section of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, Joe Henderson, and Wynton Kelly are indicative of the wide range of styles and consistent level of quality that Milestone has featured durin its history. Today, the label continues to grow as the home to some great Latin jazz and, of course, as Sonny Rollins' home on record for over thirty years.
There are only five Galaxy cuts on the album, but they are five well worth hearing and having. The leaders are Art Pepper, Red Garland, Chet Baker, Tommy Flanagan & Hank Jones and Nat Adderly, and knowledgable jazz fans will immediately recognize all of them.
As in the other installments in the Fantasy sampler series, the tracks are drawn from albums available in the Original Jazz Classics collection. This compilation can serve as a sort of catalog of the available releases, but it's a fine jazz album in its own right
