Malicool by Roswell Rudd & Toumani Diabate

This is an intriguing mix where trombonist Roswell Rudd traveled to Mali, Africa and combined his jazz trombone with traditional African music & musicians. His full, brassy tone blends well with the African strings and percussion. For the most part, the rhythm section bubbles at a low boil, moving things forward without getting in the way or being bombastic. The trombone and kora (21-stringed harp) flow on top of this with a sense of ease, delivering a gentle melodic breeze. I would say this is the African version of "smooth jazz." Well played and produced, it’s recommended for those wanting background type music with and African flavor.
