New York City-based band Whatsa has composed their first debut album, "Magica."
Produced live in the studio under three hours, the two-disc set is "based on simple sketches brought in by leader Todd Horton to employ a compositional approach to improvising." Their music is rooted in jazz, funk, rock and African music. Listening to these elements in their music makes it worthwhile for the listener.
The group calls the album "a daring collection of high energy grooves and inspired exchange." From the smooth track, "Beauty"
to the high energy "Jungle,"
Whatsa leaves their compilations to the listener's imagination.
Whatsa is one of several artists on the indie label Soulsearch Music, which is dedicated to offering a "cooperative launching pad for musicians who have an original approach to composing and performing music." Perhaps that's why "Magica"
is so intriguing, and it is hoped that Whatsa will continue to produce moving albums.
