Pop.... uh, I mean, jazz quiz: what might one get if they could combine smooth/mellow fusion with a jam band, adding a generous dollop of drum & bass/jungle-style electronica? Answer: Lotus. While a bit lite on the "grit" (the musical equivalent of Grape Nuts, or crushed red pepper on that pizza - minimum adult daily requirement not yet established) for this writer, Lotus do lay down some goes-down-easy, fleet-fingered, spry, endlessly-jimmy guitar grooves (echoes of Wes Montgomery abound, filtered through Robert Frippe’s note-multiplying electronics) over top of a shifting ebullient, breezy yet insistent rhythm matrix. Lotus have the potential to chase casual gloom with their glossy (in a good way, I mean) zoom.
