Spectral Reflections by Frank Gratkowski Quartet

These laudable freethinking progressive jazz musicians once again relay a thirst for creativity, highlighted here in rather luminous fashion. Alto saxophonist/clarinetist Frank Gratkowski’s compositional style lends itself well for the band’s expressionistic form of improvisation via an animated approach. Whether Gratkowski is executing multiphonics amid his musical partners’ chatty discourses or when they embark upon an oscillating swing vamp, the artists’ undeniable chemistry remains intact throughout. Trombonist Wolter Wierbos and his ex-employer, drummer Gerry Hemingway are at the top of their respective games here. As bassist Dieter Manderscheid often explores lower register tonalities with the trombonist, generally offering a hallowed backdrop for Gratkowski’s investigative soloing endeavors. On the piece titled "Fenster," the quartet perpetuates odd-metered rhythmic currents, serving as the basis for a mini-whirlwind of group improv. Sure enough, this outing should rank as one of the top modern jazz extravaganzas for 2003. (Vigorously recommended.... )
