I find it hard to know how to approach this kind of recording. It falls under the category of smooth jazz - the kind of fodder that many so-called jazz radio stations feature 24/7 ad nauseam. What is wrong with it? Nothing really. All the musicians are competent, the recording quality is fine, there is nothing to object to at all . . . except NOTHING HAPPENS!
I know this observation will upset many people if this is what passes for jazz in their minds. But that is indicative of the crisis that besets the form. To gain widespread acceptance it has to be watered down to the point where it loses its soul. My wife works at an Ethan Allan home design store and this is precisely the sound that is piped into her office for 12 hours every day. Nothing wrong with it. I can stand and listen for five or ten minutes while I am waiting for her. But there are a couple of thousand recordings one should have before considering buying something like this.
