Dog Out by Nordstrom - Pinton - Welin - Falt

This exuberant, European quartet conveys a penetrating yet altogether flexible approach. Here, multi-reedmen Alberto Pinton and Fredrik Nordstrom move about in multidirectional fashion. As they explore horizontal and vertical musical planes, awash with contrapuntal dialogues and probing unison lines. On works such as "Piece of Change," Pinton (clarinet) and Nordstrom (saxes) render a ballad sans any trace of sugary thematic development. Essentially, it’s a polychromatic opus highlighted by drummer Jon Falt’s lightly tapping maneuvers during the bridge. The band switches gears in gradual fashion amid emotively expressed sentiment and more than a few unorthodox twists and turns.

Many of these pieces are constructed upon linearly arranged movements. And while they occasionally delve into the free zone, the musicians’ collective poise and fluctuating stream of musical ideas, imparts a memorable impression. As they temper the pace in spots. To that end, this recording hinges on that very fine line - where freeform excursions happily coexist with mainstream centric applications. (Recommended.... )
