Under the Hat by Ada Rovatti

Under the Hat by saxist Ada Rovatti is an energy infused collection of straight-ahead mastery. Released under the Apria Records label in 2003, this eight-song CD also features several appearances by trumpeter Randy Brecker. The combination of Rovatti and Brecker is electric. The international flavors of the duo in "O Corko Mio" and "Stuntman" creates an enticing atmosphere that grooves.

Rovatti’s personality percolates within the upbeat rhythms of her own impressive arrangements, while her clarity of tone shines in the slower pieces. (With the exception of "They Can’t Take That Away From Me" and "Blues For Kahl," Rovatti is the sole composer and arranger.) Rovatti’s expertise and sax ease flows in the rapid runs of "Fourth Step." By comparison, "Roman-ce" shows a side of Rovatti that is softly sexy and light.
